As I set out on my first walk to pick litter in quite some time, I felt really happy and excited. The first road I walked down was pretty clean, with only a few beer cans and alcohol bottles lying around. I thought to myself, "This is great! Maybe things are improving around here."
But as I made my way to the next road, my mood changed. The sight that greeted me was absolutely disgusting. There were so many beer cans, plastic materials, and various litter lying everywhere, along with eight bags, yes, count them - 8 BAGS!!! of leftover food just left to rot on the side of the road. It made me feel really gross.
It was pretty likely that most of the garbage was left by construction contractors working at the Wells Recreation Center or nearby housing development. There was so much construction material lying around that it was hard to miss. I guessed the bags of leftover lunches, and food were probably leftovers from before the snow started falling. I'm calling the town tomorrow to discuss measures we can take to put a stop to this!
In the midst of all the filth, though, I did find a couple of fun things. There was a really pretty fishing lure and a pair of ice skates just sitting there on the side of the road. I can't understand why someone would just throw away ice skates like that when they were still in fair condition. It would have been better if they had just donated them instead.
